There are many advantages that motorcycles offer us over cars. In particular, the greater fluidity in traffic within a city. Also, its less pollution, its speed and of course, its ease of parking. Although the latter is not always true. Sometimes it is not so easy to park a motorcycle. Even in many cities, there is a  regulation on motorcycle parking.

Where can you park motorcycles?

According to the Traffic Law that establishes the general parking prohibitions, motorcycles " may not park on the sidewalks, walkways and other areas for pedestrians ."

However, many municipalities, through some municipal ordinances, regulate these prohibitions, as long as we do not obstruct the passage in the places mentioned in the law. These ordinances are born out of the need to regulate chaos. We are talking about the inconveniences that may occur in some municipalities that force us, as motorists, to park in these spaces.

What cities allow motorcycles to be parked on the sidewalks?

We tell you that there is no common regulation that regulates this situation in the same way in all cities. And, each one has its own regulations on parking motorcycles. Of course, there are some common issues.

Generally, the town councils set up specific places reserved for the parking of motorcycles. This prevents us from parking in bicycle spaces or in green or blue areas.

For those situations in which these reserved spaces are occupied, the option of parking on the same sidewalk is usually given. In this way, a specific width that does not exceed two meters is occupied.

Only when there is no possibility of parking in the above places, is it possible that we park on the sidewalks. However, in the vast majority of cities they allow it, accessing on foot and with the engine off. Furthermore, in most of these municipalities, the hitching of motorcycles to urban elements or trees is prohibited.

What do the regulations say for motorcycle parking in cities like Madrid or Barcelona?

In these cities they allow us to park on the sidewalks, but only if they are more than three meters wide.

These two cities have in common the establishment of specific regulations regarding the parking of motorcycles. Both agree that when there is no other choice, because the designated spaces are occupied, the motorcycle can be parked on the sidewalks, platforms or walks. Of course, they are more than three meters wide and follow a series of conditions.

These conditions are: park parallel to the curb and as close to it as possible. In addition, it is not allowed to park two lines of motorcycles on the sidewalks; and only when the width of these spaces are greater than six meters, can it be parked in a semi-battery or at an angle.
